Those
with literary interests are well catered for, both in Galway city,
only 20 miles away and on the doorstep:
Only a few minutes walk from the house is Thoor
Ballylee, W.B. Yeats' former holiday home, which has been restored
and is open to visitors during the summer months: the tower has been
restored as a Yeats Museum.
Coole Park, with its visitors' centre and famous autograph tree,
and the Kiltartan Gregory centre, are both less than 5 miles away. Coole
Park was once home to Lady Gregory, who played a central role in
the literary revival in Ireland.
Galway
City has an all year round range of theatrical and artistic and musical
events, with extra events arranged during the annual festivals:
The city has a lively atmosphere which
is truly cosmopolitan. The pavement cafes, interesting shops, street
performers, busy dock area and impressive cathedral all make a visit
worthwhile. Returning to the peace and quiet of Augill House at the
end of a day in the city provides the best of both worlds.
This
part of South Galway is an ideal base for visiting The Burren;
an outstanding area of natural beauty with its limestone landscape
criss-crossed by paths and lanes. The fascinating Ailwee Caves are
also open to the public. The dramatic coastline adjoining The
Burren includes the world renowned Cliffs of Moher.
Kinvarra,
a beautiful harbour village is a ten minute drive away.
A picturesque seaside village, Kinvarra
is situated at the north-west coastal edge of The Burren. It is particularly
atmospheric during the early morning when it is still possible to
see traditional fishing craft returning to the harbour. Dunguaire
Castle is located at the edge of the harbour and is well worth a visit,
as are the restaurants in the village. The Crane (formerly Whistler's
Bar) in the square is renowned for its traditional music and dancing
sessions, popular with both locals and visitors to whom a warm welcome
is guaranteed.
Gort
is our nearest town.It is a traditional, working,
Irish town with its weekly market and auction mart. It is at the heart
of a thriving community and contains a large number and variety of
pubs and eating establishments.
It
is only a short journey to parts of the Irish Lakes, with some of
the most beautiful scenery in Ireland.
